Typography Book

Typography 1

Project Description
This project required that I chose a topic of interest to explore as it related to typography and to then use that topic to create a book. The constraints of this project included the need to use only 12 pages, including the covers, a bibliography, a colophon and only one color other than black was permitted. I was allowed to explore the dimensions of the book, paper color, typography and the content used within.

Topic: LIFE Magazine + Typography
Class: DES 325
Professor: Kelcey Gray

Initial Sketches
Based on my research of LIFE Magazine, I created sketches to ideate layouts for spreads and single pages.

Book Mock-Ups
The next step was to create a mock-up book to visualize the layout design further. I created two in different sizes to gain a better understanding of what I wanted. The larger being the actual size of LIFE Magazine (14” x 10.5”) and the smaller was half the size (7” x 5.25”).

First Draft
I created a first draft book that I printed to be used in class critique.

Second Draft
Following critique, I made another nearly final draft. This is the step in which I was better able to understand the content of my book and how that would all fit together. Before I had not entirely decided on what I wanted to include, which made creating the layout a bit more difficult.

Final Book
After one final critique, I made edits, printed and assembled my final book using the saddle stitch method of binding.

Reflection

I felt this project best represents aspirations of mine in design as I was able to explore the entire design process as it relates to layout design work. This project offered me the opportunity to explore all areas of layout design, and the use of type within one final piece. I found the process of book creation from sketches to creating to binding to be incredibly rewarding because it gave me the opportunity to have nearly total control over the structure, content, and direction of this mini book. This project has inspired me greatly. In the future I plan to explore further into the field of layout design.
