Aesthetic Profile Postcard

Images in Communication

Project Description
The task set before me was to design a piece of work that is representational of who I am as a designer, and to indicate the areas in which I find inspiration for my work. The term postcard represents the idea that whatever I created must be something that I could send out as an introduction piece, which communicates both who I am as a designer and what my work as a designer looks like. It is meant to be designed as a cover image of my portfolio.

 Moodboard Creation
In order to best understand myself and my inspirations as a designer, I created a moodboard with a collection of images that I draw inspiration from, or are representational of the work I create.

Sketching + Ideation Process
The next step in my process was to sketch and ideate what this postcard might look like. Due to the broadness of the brief, narrowing down what I wanted this to look like was a particular challenge. To begin, I took notes on what I noticed about my work, my inspirations and how my moodboard was read during class critique.

Postcard Creation
After deciding which idea best expressed my intention behind this project, I set to work on creating this postcard as I had envisioned-- a living postcard composed of videos. The content included to be Super 8 film that I have shot in the past, carefully arranged alongside 8mm film from my Grandpa’s film archive.

Reflection
For this project I only worked with a few videos, however each was dissected into clips of my choosing that were only a few seconds long. The organization of these short clips was fairly difficult, as I needed to determine the grid placement, duration and order of all the clips within the video. I also had to figure out the coordinates of the grid system to manually type in where each individual clip would sit on the grid.

Further Reflection
The creation process of this project highlights the attention to detail I put into my work as well as my ability to create interesting layout designs. While this project explores the layout within a video, the principles of pairing content well and directing the eye of the viewer in a flowing manner apply. This project showcases my ability to jump into something I am unfamiliar with and accomplish what it is I set out to do.
